A DAY IN OUR LIFE...

...Born At Risk

Each year, more than 485,000 American babies are born at risk - entering the world too soon, too small, or too sick to survive without support in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.  Some babies may be in the NICU for less than a day, to be checked out and sent home with their joyful parents; others may lay in the unit for as long as four or five months, entering as fetuses too soon expelled from the uterine environment, eventually going home - if all goes well - as term babies whose parents have spent the intervening months riding an endless emotional roller coaster. These images capture the life in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Boston's Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Incalculable thanks are due to the parents, and NICU staff members, whose graciousness made this project possible.
